Built in 778, Kiyomizu-dera is the most-visited temple in Kyoto and has been recognized as a World Heritage site. Since its initial construction, the temple had been burnt down many times. Its present buildings are reconstructions dating from 1633.

Kiyomizu-dera is most famous for its Main Hall, where the Thousand Armed Kannon Bodhisattva is enshrined; and the Kiyomizu Stage, which is the veranda of the Main Hall. The Main Hall was built atop a precipice, with the Kiyomizu Stage jutting out over the precipice. The Stage is supported by 12-meter high pillars, which were assembled without the use of a single nail. From the Stage, visitors are able to enjoy the picturesque fall foliage below, making it one of the best places to view autumn leaves in Kyoto.

Located at the base of the Main Hall is the Otowa waterfall. Kiyomizu-dera, which literally means “clear water temple”, derives its name from the clear water of this waterfall. The waterfall is split into 3 separate streams. Legend has it that drinking these three streams of water will confer one with health, longevity, and success in studies.

Behind Kiyomizu-dera’s Main Hall stands Jishu Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. In front of the shrine are two stones, placed 18 meters apart. Successfully finding your way from one to the other with your eyes closed is said to bring luck in finding love.
